If you’re lucky to live or travel to South Africa, Dullstroom has to be on your bucket list of places to see, notably Walkersons Hotel and Spa, just a few kilometers from this beautiful quaint highland village. The area is endowed with valleys which are scattered with small dams and watercourses. Fly fishing for the rainbow and brown trout are amongst the most popular activities in the area, especially at Walkersons.
We checked in late Friday afternoon after about a 2.5-hour drive from OR Tambo International Airport in one of Walkersons Lakeside Suites. The suites are traditional – boasting a thatched roof, and an inviting open fireplace. Featuring an en-suite bathroom, a queen-sized bed, and comfortable lounge area. Our room had spectacular views of some of the lakes on the property. The views at Walkersons are mother nature at it’s best and I remember just standing there listening to the quietness, birds chirping around in the background while instant calmness washed over me.
Our Saturday morning started with a yoga session overlooking hills and trout dams followed by a delicious breakfast at Walkersons Flying Scotchman’s restaurant.Breakfast included a medley of fresh fruit accompanied by steaming creamy oats, prepared with just enough whiskey to literally take your breath away before a delicious English breakfast is served.
Activities at Walkersons are endless.Ranging from long walks along contoured stream-side pathways, to saddling-up to explore the countryside, and spending a day honing your skills in the fine art of fly fishing, Walkersons offers much in the way of things to do. Unfortunately, we could not fit all of the above in, but we did have some time to try our hand at flyfishing. Walkersons boasts 14 lakes and dams, all stocked with rainbow trout, making this estate a fly fisher’s paradise.
During my stay at Walkersons, I realized again that living in South Africa has its perks…the endless amount of sunshine, the many swoon-worthy places to stay in all nine provinces, but mostly the breathtakingly beautiful landscapes and the beautiful countrysides we have.
