Solo travelling in Franschhoek

Ernest Hemmingway once said that “Never go on trips with anyone you do not love.” I tend to carry this advice even further. If possible, never go on a trip with anyone at all. It’s easier to get absorbed in an unfamiliar landscape when solo, reliant on no one and vice versa. I have shared a few articles before on here why I love solo travelling, however, in 2018, I did not do much solo travelling, as I chose to spend more time with family and friends. However, I decided to start off 2019 by embarking on a solo trip to one of South Africa’s most romantic destinations, Franschhoek. In this blog post, I share more about my solo travelling experience in Franschhoek.

Where to stay in Franschhoek:

Travelling alone is a guilt-free way to be selfish and to have some me-time, so when choosing accommodation, I always look for accommodation where I can completely escape, but at the same time feel a sense of wanderlust. Franschhoek is so famous that the sheer number of beautiful hotels is enough to make your head spin and every place is truly breathtaking. For my solo trip, however, I decided to go with Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa.

The hotel is set against a backdrop of towering mountains and manicured gardens, any photographer’s dream. You can feel the rich history of the valley through the iconic Cape Dutch architecture and relax in various what I call “secret corners” on the hotel’s property.

My deluxe room was furnished with elegant décor and extra-luxurious finishes like a lavish king-size bed and windows overlooking mountains, greenery and natural light flowing into the room. Although this time around I travelled alone, I do appreciate a hotel bathroom that boasts his and hers vanities and that gives you an option of taking a relaxing bath or shower.

Le Franschhoek hotel has various choices of dining from breakfast at Le Verger or having drinks before dinner at the bar and lounge, but I truly enjoyed dining at Sauvage Restaurant. I indulged in a delicious a’ la Carte menu that comprised of delectable dishes from locally sourced produce. I can highly recommend their Beef Tenderloin Rossini served with toasted brioche, roast bone marrow with a delicious glass of red.

Explore Franschhoek a different way.

Franschhoek is one of the top destinations when it comes to food, romance, history, and of course wine tasting. While you’re wandering the streets of Franschhoek, stop by Masquerade. This beautiful shop in the main street of Franschhoek offers a unique selection of products that flirt unashamedly with all the senses especially for solo travelling stylish home-lovers and those adventurous souls in search of things ‘less ordinary’. All items are specially designed, hand selected or imported by Masquerade.

After shopping your heart out, grab some coffee and do a chocolate tasting at De Villiers Chocolate. They offer their very own chocolate, coffee and ice cream under one room, a world first in the sense that they make everything themselves using only authentic ingredients.

If you are looking to discover the Franschhoek wine valleys, I would highly recommend using Franschhoek Adventures and do a mountain bike tour, which meant I got some exercise in while drinking wine. I visited some really stunning boutique wine farms during my bike tour like La Couronne, La Bri, La Bourgogne and then, of course, one of my favourites Grande Provence.

What I loved most about Grande Provence is that it many elements and experiences suitable for couples and solo travellers. From one of South Africa’s finest restaurants, an art gallery and shop, private dining and accommodation. Wine lovers will also now have an opportunity to join Grande Provence’s Wine Club, which includes some remarkable benefits to their members, like exclusive invitations to members-only events as well as complimentary tastings whenever you visit Grande Provence.

Treat yourself at Santé Wellness Spa & Retreat.

Whenever I travel solo, I try to spend as much time relaxing as I do discover new places.

I love to pamper myself, especially with a spa experience and this time around I decided to visit Santé Wellness Spa & Retreat. It is the ultimate sanctuary for anyone who wants to recharge and rejuvenate. Sante’s Day Spa does not just offer a spa experience with their unique treatment methodologies, signature therapies, but they are also providing an exquisite healthy cuisine experience. Santé believes that nourishing the body through lovely food is an integral part of their offering and part of their overall wellness experience.

I was blown away by my entire experience at Santé, especially my therapist that gave special attention to some concerning areas during my full body massage. Visiting this spa was one of the best spa experiences I have had in a while, the perfect way to end off my solo trip experience in Franschhoek!

I dare you to embark on a solo trip this year and let me know how the experience was. I guarantee you; you will walk away more empowering that before.
